Cremation is a personal choice. It may reflect wishes expressed by the person during their lifetime or a decision made by the family in light of the circumstances. During the first hours, relatives often need practical guidance: which documents should be gathered, who contacts the crematorium and how a calm, meaningful farewell can be arranged.

This guide outlines the main stages in straightforward language. Requirements can vary according to location, the documents already available and the details of each case, so the final checks should always be made for the individual circumstances rather than based on a generic list.

Before the process begins

The first step is to establish clearly what is known about the person’s wishes for cremation and for any farewell ceremony. If a relevant declaration or written instruction exists, it is helpful to make it available at the beginning. Where no such document is available, the funeral home can explain who may provide the necessary authorisation and what must be confirmed.

At the same time, the deceased person’s key details and the documents issued following the death are gathered. Early contact makes it easier to identify anything missing before a date is arranged, reducing the risk of delays or repeated journeys for relatives.

Documents that are usually checked

The exact list is not identical in every case. It will generally include the deceased person’s identification details, the medical and civil-registration documents connected with the death, and any declarations or authorisations required for cremation. Additional steps may be needed when documents were issued abroad or when a transfer from another region is involved.

For this reason, documents should be reviewed before the booking is completed. A funeral home can coordinate with the relevant services and the crematorium, while telling the family what must be provided or signed. Current requirements should be confirmed for each case instead of relying on an old checklist or general online information.

The main stages of cremation

Once the documentation has been reviewed, the transfer is arranged and an available date is agreed with the crematorium. The family then decides whether a farewell ceremony will take place beforehand, who will attend and which additional services are appropriate. Clear information should be provided about the schedule, arrival time and the collection of the ashes.
